Parents protest lack of parental input in MCPS decision to close Grade 6-12 Secondary Learning Centers. The Secondary Learning Centers currently serve students with disabilities who need smaller, self-contained classes in order to learn optimally. The MCPS proposal would phase out the Learning Centers over 6 years and would not allow any new students, including current 5th Grade students, to enter a Learning Center starting next year. Instead, these students would be placed in the general student population and would receive academic assistance from Special Education co-teachers and paraeducators. Parents believe the plan is seriously flawed and are protesting MCPS's decision to exclude all Learning Center parents from the decision-making process. They want MCPS to postpone implementation of the plan for at least one year in order to allow MCPS to formulate a better plan with full parental involvement in the process.
