For several years, Riderwood staff and residents have been helping with the construction of 24 back-to-back, three-level, three-bedroom townhouses at this site. On August 5th, the first 12 families realized their dreams of home ownership at a special home dedication ceremony. During the dedication ceremony, John Paukstis, Executive Director, Montgomery County Habitat for Humanity (MCHH), commented “I love the folks at Riderwood, they make a special contribution at the Linganore Woods Project in Burtonsville, Maryland, as volunteers.â€
The December 1st build day was the first opportunity Riderwood’s Friends of Habitat for Humanity had to help construct the final 12 townhouses, which will be dedicated in late December 2008. Members of MCHH began construction of these final units in September 2007.
Throughout the December 1st work day, Riderwood staff and residents teamed up on installing the outside Styrofoam insulation on the first and second floors. Despite the fridge temperatures, volunteers took round plastic cap roofing fasteners and hammers in hand to secure the house insulation wrap. This phase of the project was important since most external work on the homes needs to be completed before real inclement winter weather hits the DC area. Climbing ladders and fitting the insulation around the townhouse windows and doorways tested the workmanship skills of each crew member – and everyone passed with flying colors!
